Compression Tights vs Shorts for Hyrox

Compression Tights vs Shorts for Hyrox

This comes up more than any other kit question, and the honest answer is that both work. What differs is coverage, temperature and how the garment behaves during station work. Here is how to decide.

The short answer

Choose tights if you want full quad and calf support, if you run cold, or if your race hall is likely to be cool. Choose shorts if you run hot, if you already wear calf guards, or if you dislike full coverage at the knee. Neither is faster. This is a comfort and support decision.

Coverage and support

Tights deliver graduated compression across the whole leg, ankle to waist. For the sled push, where your quads are doing most of the work, that continuous support is what most athletes report preferring. Shorts cover the quads and hamstrings but leave the calves bare, which matters because the calves take load from the runs, the sled pull and the wall balls.

The shorts route is not a compromise if you pair them with calf guards. That combination gives you quad support plus targeted calf support and lets you regulate temperature at the knee. Plenty of experienced Hyrox athletes race exactly this way.

Temperature

This is the one people underestimate. Hyrox venues are indoor, crowded and warmer than the outdoor conditions you trained in. If you tend to overheat, full-length tights in a 225 GSM knit will feel like more fabric than you want by the fourth run. If you race in the UK winter season or you run cold, the opposite applies.

Station stability

Sandbag lunges are the test. Repeated deep flexion under load is where a poorly constructed waistband starts to travel. Tights generally have the advantage here simply because there is more fabric anchoring the garment across the leg. Shorts with a weak waistband will move. Shorts with a proper one will not.

Our compression tights for Hyrox and the matching shorts both use a 225 GSM circular knit at 15-20 mmHg, so the compression and fabric weight are the same in either. The choice really is about coverage rather than construction.

A quick comparison

  • Full leg support: tights.
  • Running hot: shorts.
  • Calf support: tights, or shorts plus calf guards.
  • Cold venue or winter season: tights.
  • Freedom at the knee: shorts.
  • Sandbag lunge stability: tights have a slight edge.

What about pockets?

If you carry gels, this decides it for some people. Our P1 Ultra shorts use 360 degree stretch waist pockets, which hold gels and a key without bouncing. If you need to carry anything on course, check pocket placement before you decide on coverage.

Frequently asked

Can I wear shorts over tights? Yes, and some athletes do for modesty or pocket access. It adds warmth, so factor that in.

Do elite Hyrox athletes wear tights or shorts? You will see both at the front of the field, which tells you it is not a performance decider.

What if I cannot decide? Train in both, including one sled session in each. Your preference will be obvious by the second session.

Both options sit in our compression collection, and race socks are in the race socks collection. Free UK delivery over £50.
