The Roxzone Explained: Where Hyrox Races Are Won

The roxzone is the transition area between the run track and the workout stations. The clock runs the entire time you are in it, and for most people it is the single largest pool of free time in the race.

What actually happens in it

You finish a 1km run, enter the roxzone, walk to your station, complete the station, then walk back out to start the next run. That walking, plus any recovering, drinking or standing about you do, is all on the clock.

How much time it costs

Across eight transitions, a typical amateur spends five to eight minutes in the roxzone. Elite athletes are down around three. That gap is often larger than the difference in their actual station times.

Put differently: tightening your roxzone can take several minutes off your finish without you getting a single per cent fitter.

Why people lose time here

  • Recovering in transition. Standing with hands on knees, waiting to feel better. You will not feel better.
  • Wandering. Not knowing where your next station is, so drifting across the hall.
  • Faffing. Adjusting kit, tying laces, fiddling with a watch.
  • Over-drinking. One mouthful is fine, queuing at a water point is not.

How to fix it

  1. Walk the venue before your wave. Know the layout so you never hesitate.
  2. Walk with purpose. Brisk walking, not shuffling. You are recovering either way.
  3. Sort your kit before the start. Laces double-knotted, nothing that needs adjusting.
  4. Start the station immediately. The first ten reps are your recovery.
  5. Practise transitions in training. Run, walk 60 seconds, station, straight into the next run.

The mental part

The roxzone is where the race gives you permission to slow down, and where most people take it. Treating it as part of the race rather than a break between efforts is worth more than any single physical adaptation.

Frequently asked

Can I run through the roxzone? You can move as fast as you like, but brisk walking is usually the sensible play.

Is roxzone time shown separately? Many events report it in your results, which makes it easy to see what it cost you.

Can I drink in the roxzone? Yes, and you should, but keep it to a mouthful on the move.
