Short answer: Hyrox is not an acronym. It does not stand for a phrase in the way that CrossFit or parkrun describe what they are. It is a coined brand name, built from "hybrid" and a hard, rock-like ending, chosen to suggest a hybrid athlete event that tests both endurance and strength.
So what actually is it?
Hyrox is a mass-participation indoor fitness race. Every event, anywhere in the world, follows the same structure: eight 1km runs, each followed by one functional workout station. Total running is 8km, and the eight stations are always the same, always in the same order.
That last part is the reason it caught on. Unlike an obstacle race or a CrossFit competition, the workout is not a surprise. You know precisely what you are training for, and your time in Manchester is directly comparable with someone's time in Hamburg.
The eight stations
- 1000m SkiErg
- 50m sled push
- 50m sled pull
- 80m burpee broad jumps
- 1000m row
- 200m farmers carry
- 100m sandbag lunges
- 100 wall balls
Where it came from
Hyrox was founded in Germany in 2017 by Christian Toetzke, an events organiser, alongside former Olympic hockey champion Moritz Fuerste. The idea was a race that a committed amateur could train for and finish, with a format standardised enough to support genuine world rankings.
It has grown extremely quickly in the UK, with major events in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Cardiff now selling out well in advance.
How is it different from CrossFit?
The workout is known in advance and never changes, there is far more running, and there is no barbell, no gymnastics and no skill work like double-unders or muscle-ups. It rewards aerobic capacity and muscular endurance rather than technical range.
How is it different from a Spartan or Tough Mudder?
It is indoors, there is no mud, no crawling and no obstacles in the traditional sense. It is much closer to a running race with strength stations bolted on than it is to an obstacle course.
Frequently asked
Is Hyrox an acronym? No. It is a made-up brand name, not initials.
How long does it take? Elite athletes finish around the hour mark. A typical first-timer is somewhere between 90 minutes and two hours.
Do I need to be able to do all eight stations to enter? No, but you do need to be able to move the sleds. That is the one station where being underprepared can genuinely stop your race.
Racing soon? Our compression tights for Hyrox use 15-20 mmHg graduated compression in a 225 GSM knit built to hold shape through sled and sandbag work, and our compression race socks run at 25-30 mmHg. Free UK delivery over £50.
